Generally speaking, there are three primary kinds of homicide charges:
Murder is the unlawful killing of another with malice aforethought, that is, with the intent to kill, intent to commit great bodily injury, with reckless indifference, or with intent to commit a felony.
Voluntary Manslaughter is murder committed as a result of some adequate provocation (e.g., committed in the heat of passion).
Involuntary Manslaughter may occur in non-intentional deaths caused by criminally negligent conduct or caused during the commission of an unlawful act not covered by the felony murder rule.
